One of those weeks

Posted in Group:

It's been one of those weeks where I've just been so miserable and don't want to do anything. Any suggestions on how to get out of this?

Hmmm...we've all been there. Is this something you experience often, this feeling of being miserable? As a therapist if someone feels depressed and needs a few quick suggestions I often suggest 3 things:
1- get outside
For some reason being inside all day long for too long is correlated with feeling down...perhaps it is b/c we are living creatures that need the natural environment. Whatever it is, see if you can go on a simple walk for a few blocks; drive yourself to a pretty spot in a park, sit outdoors at a coffee shop.

2-Get some kind of excercise.
We ALL hear that exercise is good for us and that we should do it...yah, yah, yah..
However, there is something to this. It boosts the chemicals in our brain that make us happier and gets out built up energy (such as anger or frustration). THis could be anything really- a walk for a little while, a yoga class, dancing to music you like.

3-Do something you like that distracts you from your head
My usual suggestion is a good book that really gets you motivated to read! A happy or funny movie, a hobby you enjoy.

Hope this helps for now!
Warmly,
Kellie Montgomery, LMFT
